Muscle Preservation Method

Muscle preservation methods are strategies used to maintain skeletal-muscle mass, strength, and function when normal growth or activity is limited, making them important in physiology, aging, illness, and recovery research. They work by reducing the imbalance between muscle-protein breakdown and synthesis through targeted conditions such as mechanical loading, sufficient nutritional support, rehabilitation, or other experimentally controlled interventions. Researchers use these methods to evaluate muscle wasting, test treatments, and protect physical capacity during immobilization or disease, while measurements of tissue size, force, and protein turnover help determine whether a preservation strategy is effective.

2023

C. elegans have two types of muscles, single sarcomere and multiple sarcomere, or striated muscles. This video describes the arrangement of the striated body wall muscles, which are responsible for a worm’s locomotion and includes a sample protocol to measure muscle morphology using image analysis software.

Manual Muscle Testing: A Method of Measuring Extremity Muscle Strength Applied to Critically Ill Patients

Survivors of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and critical illness frequently develop long-lasting muscle weakness. Manual muscle testing (MMT) is a standardized clinical examination commonly used to measure strength of peripheral skeletal muscle groups. This video demonstrates MMT using the 6-point Medical Research Council scale.

We have developed a device (Twister) to study the regulation of tonic muscle activity during active postural maintenance. Twister measures torsional resistance and muscular responses in standing subjects during twisting of the body axis. The device can be flexibly configured to study various aspects of tonic control across the neck, trunk, and/or hips.

The prevention of human trichinellosis in many countries worldwide is based on the laboratory examination of muscle samples from susceptible animals by methods of digestion, of which the magnetic stirrer method is considered the gold standard.

A Method to Preserve Wetland Roots and Rhizospheres for Elemental Imaging

We describe a protocol to sample, preserve, and section intact roots and the surrounding rhizosphere soil from wetland environments using rice (Oryza sativa L.) as a model species. Once preserved, the sample can be analyzed using elemental imaging techniques, such as synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (XRF) chemical speciation imaging.
