Natural Competence

Natural competence is the genetically regulated ability of certain bacteria to take up DNA from their surroundings, enabling genetic transformation and influencing adaptation. During competence, specialized surface proteins bind extracellular DNA, transport it across the cell envelope, and often degrade one strand while the other enters the cytoplasm, where it can recombine with the chromosome or persist as an episome. This process contributes to horizontal gene transfer, the spread of traits such as antibiotic resistance, and bacterial evolution. In biology research, natural competence also provides a basis for studying DNA uptake, genome plasticity, and microbial transformation mechanisms.

Training and Competency in Animal Procedures

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. A Stepwise Approach to Training Proper training and competency in animal procedures are essential to ensure high standards of animal welfare and reliable scientific outcomes. A structured, progressive training approach is...

Competence-Induced DNA Uptake in Staphylococcus aureus

2025

Source: Cafini, F., et.al. Methodology for the Study of Horizontal Gene Transfer in Staphylococcus aureus. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates competence-induced DNA uptake in Staphylococcus aureus through natural transformation. A chloramphenicol-sensitive strain engineered to constitutively express a sigma factor is cultured under nutrient-limiting conditions to enhance competence, then incubated with donor DNA carrying a resistance gene. Successful gene transfer is confirmed by the...

Symbolic Understanding I: Pictorial Competence

2026

Symbolic understanding is the ability to use symbols, such as words, gestures, or images, to represent objects, people, and concepts that may not be physically present. An important part of this ability is pictorial competence, or the understanding that a picture represents something other than itself. For example, recognizing a yellow circle with rays as the sun shows pictorial competence.Early Responses to PicturesSome foundations of pictorial understanding appear early in infancy. By about...

Nature and Nurture

2019

Many human characteristics, like height, are shaped by both nature—in other words, by our genes—and by nurture, or our environment. For example, chronic stress during childhood inhibits the production of growth hormones and consequently reduces bone growth and height. Scientists estimate that 70-90% of variation in height is due to genetic differences among individuals, and 10-30% of variation in height is due to differences in the environments that individuals experience, such as differences...
