Sphingobacterium

Sphingobacterium is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria recognized for containing sphingophospholipids in their cell membranes, a feature that distinguishes these organisms from many other bacterial groups. These mostly aerobic, non-spore-forming bacteria use membrane-associated sphingolipid chemistry to maintain cellular structure and interact with surrounding environments, while species-level traits such as nutrient use and enzyme production vary. Sphingobacterium occurs in soil, water, plants, and other organic habitats, and some species have been isolated from clinical samples. Studying the genus supports bacterial classification, environmental microbiology, and investigation of potential industrial enzymes and opportunistic infections.
