Nfpa 704

NFPA 704 is a standardized hazard identification system that communicates the immediate risks of hazardous materials through a diamond-shaped label, helping people respond safely during fires, spills, and other emergencies. Its four color-coded sections indicate health hazards (blue), flammability (red), instability or reactivity (yellow), and special hazards (white), while numerical ratings from 0 to 4 describe increasing severity in the first three sections. In biology laboratories, NFPA 704 signage supports chemical inventory management, storage decisions, risk assessment, and emergency planning for substances such as fixatives, solvents, and disinfectants. It complements, rather than replaces, detailed safety data sheets and container labels.

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA While the use of various chemicals in experimental research is essential, it is also important to safely store and maintain them as a part of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program. The properties of chemicals and their reactivity vary broadly and if chemicals are not managed, stored, and labeled properly, they can have harmful or even destructive consequences such as toxic fume...
