Ocean Microbiology

Ocean microbiology is the study of microorganisms in marine environments, including bacteria, archaea, microscopic algae, and viruses, and their essential roles in ocean ecosystems. These organisms transform organic matter and inorganic nutrients through processes such as photosynthesis, decomposition, nitrogen fixation, and carbon cycling, while interactions among microbes regulate energy flow through the microbial loop. Ocean microbiology helps explain marine food webs, oxygen production, climate-related biogeochemical cycles, and ecosystem responses to pollution or warming. It also supports research in environmental monitoring, biotechnology, aquaculture, and the search for marine organisms with useful biochemical properties.

This study presents an excavation method for investigating subsurface hydrological, geochemical, and microbiological heterogeneity of a soil lysimeter. The lysimeter simulates an artificial hillslope which was initially under homogeneous condition and had been subjected to approximately 5,000 mm of water over eight cycles of irrigation in an 18-month period.
