Online Growth Monitoring

Online growth monitoring is the real-time measurement of biological growth as cells, microorganisms, or tissues increase in number, mass, or activity. In biology, it typically uses continuous or repeated measurements such as optical density, cell capacitance, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide production, or metabolic signals to track changes without interrupting cultivation. These data reveal growth phases, including adaptation, rapid proliferation, and nutrient-limited decline, while helping researchers detect changes in culture health and growth rate. Online growth monitoring supports bioreactor control, microbial physiology, cell culture optimization, fermentation, drug development, and reproducible studies of how environmental conditions affect biological systems.

This publication describes the design of laboratory photobioreactors (PBRs) with customizable light regimes. The growth of cyanobacteria or microalgae, using bicarbonate as their carbon source, is monitored continuously by measuring volumetric oxygen production. These PBRs facilitate rapid, replicated laboratory growth comparisons with little user intervention during experiments.
