Orbicularis Oris

The orbicularis oris is a circular facial muscle that surrounds the mouth and controls important movements of the lips. When its muscle fibers contract, they narrow or close the oral opening and can draw the lips forward, while coordinated relaxation and contraction with neighboring facial muscles produces varied lip positions. This mechanism supports essential functions such as sucking, drinking, chewing, swallowing, speech articulation, and facial expression. Studying the orbicularis oris helps biology and health science students understand facial muscle organization, neuromuscular control, and how changes in muscle function can affect communication, feeding, and oral movement.

Yeast Transformation and Cloning

2023

S. cerevisiae are unicellular eukaryotes that are a commonly-used model organism in biological research. In the course of their work, yeast researchers rely upon the fundamental technique of transformation (the uptake of foreign DNA by the cell) to control gene expression, induce genetic deletions, express recombinant proteins, and label subcellular structures. This video provides an overview of how and why yeast transformation is carried out in the lab. The important features of yeast...

A Standardized Surgical Technique for Tessier Medial Transnasal Canthopexy

Medial canthopexy allows correction of the position and fixation of the medial canthal tendon. Due to the technical difficulties of this procedure, there is a need for a detailed protocol for educational purposes. Here, we describe a standardized reproducible technique for bilateral medial transnasal canthopexy by an orbitonasal approach.
