Passive Tactile Stimulation

Passive tactile stimulation is the application of touch, pressure, vibration, or movement to a biological subject without requiring the subject to initiate the contact. These stimuli deform skin and tissue, activating mechanoreceptors that convert mechanical forces into electrical signals transmitted through sensory nerves to the central nervous system. In biology, researchers use passive tactile stimulation to examine sensory processing, neural development, reflexes, and behavior under controlled conditions. Comparing responses across stimulus type, intensity, and duration can clarify how organisms detect and interpret touch, while informing studies of nervous system function, development, and sensory-based interventions.

This paper describes the procedures for tactile stimulation of rat pups and subsequent Golgi-Cox staining of neuronal morphology. Tactile stimulation is a positive experience that is administered in the perinatal period by stroking pups with a household duster. Golgi-cox staining is a reliable procedure permitting the visualization of entire neurons.

Testing Tactile Masking between the Forearms

Here we explore contralateral tactile masking between the forearms in which tactile detection thresholds are modulated by vibration applied to a remote site. The details of which remote sites have an effect can tell us about how the body is represented in the brain.

Measurement of Tactile Allodynia in a Murine Model of Bacterial Prostatitis

Infection of the prostate may be a contributing factor in mediating pelvic pain in chronic prostatitis. We describe the procedure for preparation of standardized bacterial inoculum, instillation of bacteria into the urethra of male mice and methodology for measuring tactile allodynia in mice over time.
