Phagocytosis Assessment

Phagocytosis assessment is the measurement of how effectively cells, particularly immune phagocytes such as macrophages and neutrophils, recognize, engulf, and process particulate material. In a typical assay, cells are exposed to labeled microbes, beads, or other targets, and uptake is quantified through fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, or related analytical methods that distinguish internalized material from surface-bound particles. This approach helps characterize innate immune function, cellular activation, and host responses to infection or inflammation. It is also used to evaluate immunomodulatory compounds, compare phagocytic activity across cell types or conditions, and investigate defects in cellular clearance mechanisms.

Cells pull particles inward and engulf them in spherical vesicles in an energy-requiring process called endocytosis. Phagocytosis (“cellular eating”) is one of three major types of endocytosis. Cells use phagocytosis to take in large objects—such as other cells (or their debris), bacteria, and even viruses. The objective of phagocytosis is often destruction. Cells use phagocytosis to eliminate unwelcome visitors, like pathogens (e.g., viruses and bacteria). It is perhaps unsurprising, that many...
