Pro-apoptotic Protein Expression

Pro-apoptotic protein expression is the production and regulation of proteins that promote apoptosis, a controlled form of cell death essential for tissue development, homeostasis, and removal of damaged cells. These proteins act through pathways such as mitochondrial outer-membrane permeabilization, which releases cytochrome c and activates caspases, or by transmitting death-receptor signals that initiate apoptotic cascades. In biology research, measuring pro-apoptotic protein levels helps reveal how cells respond to stress, developmental cues, infection, or anticancer treatments. Understanding this regulation supports studies of cancer, neurodegeneration, immune function, and therapeutic strategies designed to restore appropriate cell death.

Here we describe an effective method for studying dynamics of apoptotic cell clearance in vivo. This method employs live Drosophila embryos as a powerful model for monitoring phagocytosis of apoptotic cells using specific labeling of apoptotic cells and phagocytes.
