Photosynthetic Activity Measurement

Photosynthetic activity measurement is the assessment of how efficiently plants, algae, or cyanobacteria convert light energy into chemical energy, providing a direct view of photosynthetic performance. Researchers quantify this activity by monitoring indicators such as oxygen evolution, carbon dioxide uptake, or changes in chlorophyll fluorescence under controlled light, temperature, and carbon dioxide conditions. These measurements reveal how environmental factors, nutrients, pollutants, or genetic differences affect photosynthesis. In biology, the approach supports studies of plant physiology, stress responses, productivity, and ecosystem function, while helping evaluate crop performance and the effects of changing environmental conditions.

Source: Shivaiah, K., et al. Plastoglobule Lipid Droplet Isolation from Plant Leaf Tissue and Cyanobacteria. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)The video demonstrates the isolation of plastoglobules from cyanobacteria. It begins with a culture of cyanobacteria and proceeds through cell disruption using mechanical force. The release of photosynthetic pigments indicates successful lysis. A sucrose step gradient is then used to separate cellular components by density, allowing low-density plastoglobules to form a...

This report describes a method for measuring Drosophila larval activity using the TriKinetics Drosophila Activity Monitor. The device employs infrared beams to detect movements of up to 16 individual animals. Data can be analyzed to represent motion parameters including rates and the positions of the animals within the assay chambers.
