Plasmolysis

Plasmolysis is the reversible loss of water from a plant cell that causes its plasma membrane to pull away from the cell wall, making it a useful indicator of cellular water balance. It occurs when a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, where lower external water potential drives water out through the selectively permeable membrane by osmosis; the vacuole shrinks and turgor pressure declines. Studying plasmolysis helps explain osmoregulation, membrane permeability, and water potential in biology. It also supports microscopy investigations of cell structure and provides a practical way to assess how cells respond to changing environmental conditions.
