Porcine Heart Isolation

Porcine heart isolation is a laboratory technique for removing a pig heart and preparing it for controlled ex vivo study, providing a model that closely reflects mammalian cardiac anatomy and physiology. The procedure involves carefully excising the heart while preserving major vessels, then maintaining the tissue with an oxygenated perfusion solution that supplies nutrients and supports contractile activity. Researchers use isolated porcine hearts to investigate cardiac mechanics, coronary circulation, ischemia-reperfusion injury, electrophysiology, and responses to drugs or medical devices. This approach enables direct measurement of heart function under defined experimental conditions while reducing the complexity of whole-animal studies.
