Quartz Glass Blowing

Quartz glass blowing is the craft of shaping fused silica, or quartz glass, into laboratory vessels and specialized components by heating the material until it softens and forming it with air pressure and hand tools. Unlike ordinary glass, fused silica requires very high temperatures because its silica network has a high softening point; controlled rotation, localized heating, and blowing produce hollow forms while limiting contamination and thermal stress. In biology, custom quartzware supports high-temperature sterilization, microscopy, cell culture, and analytical experiments because it is chemically resistant, optically clear, and able to withstand thermal cycling. This technique enables durable, precisely fitted equipment for specialized research workflows.

Source: Paolone, G., et al. Personalized Needles for Microinjections in the Rodent Brain. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates a rodent brain microneedle injection using a quartz microneedle with holes. The microneedle is attached to a syringe and micropump to control the delivery rate. The needle with the injection solution is inserted into the brain with the delivery speed set at low. Once positioned, the delivery speed is increased. The needle is withdrawn after a brief pause.

The Looking Glass Self

2025

The concept of the looking-glass self describes how an individual's self-concept is shaped by their perception of how others see them. This psychological theory, first introduced by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, posits that self-identity emerges in a social context and is influenced by the judgments—real or imagined—of others.Research suggests that individuals frequently overestimate how positively others perceive them. This is particularly evident in physical self-perception,...

Quartz-Crystal Microbalance Biosensor-Based Biopanning to Study Protein-Drug Interactions

2025

This video demonstrates a method to study protein-drug interactions using QCM biosensor-based biopanning of the T7 phage-displayed peptide library. The biopanning of phages displaying a specific peptide on the QCM biosensor allows specific isolation of high-affinity peptides, followed by amino acid sequencing, which helps to identify specific interaction sites on the target protein.
