R-squared Feature Selection

R-squared feature selection is a statistical method that identifies predictor variables explaining variation in an outcome, using the coefficient of determination (R²) to assess model fit. It works by comparing models with different feature sets and selecting variables that increase the proportion of response variance explained, often alongside adjusted R² or cross-validation to limit overfitting as predictors are added. In biology, this approach can prioritize genes, proteins, or measured traits associated with phenotypes, disease status, or experimental responses. By reducing redundant variables and focusing models on informative features, it can improve interpretability and support biomarker discovery and predictive analysis.

Here, we describe a standard protocol for quantifying the optokinetic reflex. It combines virtual drum stimulation and video-oculography, and thus allows precise evaluation of the feature selectivity of the behavior and its adaptive plasticity.

Root Mean Square

If in an experiment, data values have a probability of being both positive and negative, neither the arithmetic mean, the geometric mean, nor the harmonic mean can be used to calculate the central tendency of the data set. In particular, if the positive and negative values are equally likely, the arithmetic mean is close to zero. For example, consider the velocity of gas molecules in a container. The gas molecules are moving in different directions, which might impart positive and negative...

Punnett Squares

A Punnett square displays the possible genotypes offspring can inherit from two parental genotypes. If a trait’s inheritance pattern (e.g., dominant or recessive) is known, Punnett squares can also be used to determine the probability of inheriting a phenotype. Punnett squares are applicable in situations where trait inheritance is determined by a single gene locus and traits are independently inherited. However, they cannot predict trait probabilities for more complex genetic inheritance...

Chi-square Analysis

The chi-square test is a statistical hypothesis test. It is used to check whether there is a significant difference between an expected value and an observed value. In the context of genetics, it enables us to either accept or reject a hypothesis, based on how much the observed values deviate from the expected values. The chi-square test was developed by Pearson in 1990. The first step of performing a Chi-square analysis is to establish a null hypothesis, which assumes that there is no real...
