Rabbit Lung Model

Rabbit lung models are experimental systems that use rabbits, or rabbit-derived lung tissues, to investigate respiratory structure, function, and disease. Their value comes from examining how ventilation, gas exchange, airway responses, and tissue injury change under controlled physiological or experimental conditions, with measurements such as pulmonary mechanics, inflammatory responses, and histopathology linking biological changes to lung performance. In biology and biomedical research, these models support studies of respiratory infection, inflammation, toxic injury, drug delivery, and tissue repair, helping researchers evaluate mechanisms and candidate interventions before clinical testing while highlighting the limits of translating animal findings to human lungs.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Anesthesia is an essential component of rabbit surgical and experimental procedures because it prevents pain, reduces stress responses, and helps immobilize the animal during handling and manipulation when general anesthesia is...

Here, we describe the necessary steps for establishing a rat EVLP model and show the inflammatory profile associated with the perfused lungs. The aim is to propagate knowledge and experiences about the rat EVLP model, enabling the integral understanding of the biological responses associated with that revolutionary technique.
