Retinal Hormone Mount

A retinal hormone mount is a laboratory preparation that preserves the retina as a flattened tissue sheet so hormone-related molecules or signaling cells can be examined in their spatial context. Researchers dissect and flatten the retina, fix the tissue, and use antibody-based labeling or other stains to visualize hormone receptors, endocrine signals, or associated cellular markers under microscopy. This approach supports analysis of retinal organization, neuroendocrine signaling, and changes linked to development, physiology, or disease. By retaining relationships across retinal layers and regions, retinal mounts help connect molecular localization with tissue structure and function.

Types of Hormones

Hormones can be classified into three main types based on their chemical structures: steroids, peptides, and amines. Their actions are mediated by the specific receptors they bind to on target cells. Steroid hormones are derived from cholesterol and are lipophilic in nature. This allows them to readily traverse the lipid-rich cell membrane to bind to their intracellular receptors in the cytoplasm or nucleus. Once bound, the cytoplasmic hormone-receptor complex translocates to the nucleus.

Hormonal Regulation

The renin-aldosterone system is an endocrine system which guides the renal absorption of water and electrolytes, thus managing blood pressure and osmoregulation. Activation of the system begins in the kidneys with a small cluster of cells adjacent to the afferent and efferent blood vessels of the renal corpuscle. As the nephrons are filtering blood, juxtaglomerular cells monitor blood pressure. If they detect a decrease in pressure, they release the hormone renin into the bloodstream.

Plant Hormones

Plant hormones—or phytohormones—are chemical molecules that modulate one or more physiological processes of a plant. In animals, hormones are often produced in specific glands and circulated via the circulatory system. However, plants lack hormone-producing glands. Instead, plant hormones are often produced in regions of active growth, like the tips of roots and shoots. Additionally, even very low concentrations of plant hormones can have a profound effect on growth and development processes.
