Right Ventricular Pressure

Right ventricular pressure is the force generated by the right ventricle to move blood through the pulmonary circulation, making it an important indicator of cardiac function and vascular resistance. It rises when ventricular muscle contracts during systole and falls during diastole as the chamber relaxes and fills; the pressure must overcome resistance in the pulmonary arteries while remaining lower than left ventricular pressure. Measuring or estimating right ventricular pressure helps assess pulmonary hypertension, right-sided heart strain, congenital heart disease, and overall cardiopulmonary function. In biology and clinical research, pressure data support studies of ventricular adaptation, disease progression, and responses to treatment.

Measuring left ventricular pressure (LV) in embryonic and neonatal mice is described. Pressure is measured by inserting a needle connected to a fluid-filled transducer into the LV under ultrasound guidance. Care must be taken to maintain normal cardiac function during the experimental protocol.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension and Assessment of Right Ventricular Function in the Piglet

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) and Right Ventricular (RV) dysfunction were induced in piglets by progressive obstruction of the pulmonary arteries. Consequences were remarkably similar to those observed in CTEPH patients. This animal model would be a very useful tool for pathophysiology and therapeutic experiments on CTEPH and RV failure.
