Robotic Replica Pinning

Robotic replica pinning is an automated biological technique that transfers microorganisms arranged in a defined grid from one growth medium to another, enabling rapid, reproducible analysis of many strains. A robotic pinning head uses an array of sterilizable pins to collect small samples from source colonies and deposit them onto fresh agar or selective media while preserving their spatial identity. In yeast and other microbial systems, this approach supports genetic screens, genotype–phenotype studies, drug sensitivity testing, and synthetic genetic interaction mapping. By standardizing colony transfer and increasing throughput, robotic replica pinning helps researchers compare growth outcomes across large strain collections.

We present methods for fabrication of patterned microstructures of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and their use as master molds for production of polymer microstructures with organized nanoscale surface texture. The CNT forests are densified by condensation of solvent onto the substrate, which significantly increases their packing density and enables self-directed formation of 3D shapes.

Euler's Formula for Pin-Ended Columns

2024

In structural engineering, the stability of columns under compressive axial loads is a critical consideration, described as buckling. A typical example involves a column PQ, which is pin-connected at both ends and subjected to a centric axial load F applied at one end, with a reaction force of F' = -F at the other end. Here, it is crucial to understand that when an applied load exceeds the critical load, buckling occurs as the system becomes unstable. To calculate the critical load, envision...
