Small Bowel Transplant

Small bowel transplant is a surgical procedure that replaces a diseased or nonfunctioning portion of the small intestine with a donor intestine, helping patients with irreversible intestinal failure maintain nutrition and fluid balance. During transplantation, surgeons connect the graft’s blood vessels and intestinal tract, while immunosuppressive therapy limits the recipient’s immune response to donor antigens; surveillance is needed because the intestine contains abundant immune tissue and is particularly vulnerable to rejection. In biology and medicine, this procedure illustrates tissue compatibility, host–graft interactions, and immune regulation, while providing an option for patients who cannot sustain health through parenteral nutrition.

The mouse small bowel transplantation model has been recognized as an important tool to study mechanismes of immune rejection and screen new immunosuppressive drugs. However, this model is limited to use because the techniques involved is an extremely technically challenge. Now we introduce the modified technique.

Small bowel transplantation has become an accepted treatment option for patients with irreversible intestinal failure. Our experimental model of orthotopic small bowel transplantation in rats serves as a reliable tool to address underlying immunologic and inflammatory processes that complicate intestinal transplantation.
