Spectrophotometry Plate Reader

A spectrophotometry plate reader is a laboratory instrument that measures light-based signals from many microplate wells, enabling rapid, parallel analysis of biological samples. It directs selected wavelengths through each well and compares transmitted light with incident light to calculate absorbance, often using the Beer–Lambert relationship between absorbance and analyte concentration. In biology, researchers use plate readers to quantify nucleic acids and proteins, monitor cell density, measure enzyme kinetics, and evaluate colorimetric assays. Automated readings improve throughput, reduce sample volumes, and support reproducible comparisons across experimental conditions, making the technique valuable in research, diagnostics, drug screening, and biotechnology.

2023

The microplate reader is a multimodal instrument that allows for a variety of experiments to be performed and measured simultaneously. Microplate readers can make absorbance, fluorescence and luminescence measurements. Multiwell plates are integral to the microplate reader and allow for many experiments to be performed at once. Regardless of the assay type, experiments on the plate reader utilize a standard curve to determine the experimental values. This curve uses samples of known...

Spectrophotometry is the quantitative measurement of the absorption, reflection, diffraction, or transmission of electromagnetic radiation through a material as a function of the intensity and wavelength of the radiation. A spectrophotometer is a device used to measure the change in the radiation intensity caused by its interaction with the material. The essential components of a spectrophotometer include a source of electromagnetic radiation, a slot for placing a material to be analyzed, and a...
