Synthetic Biology Prototyping

Synthetic biology prototyping is the iterative design and testing of engineered biological systems, enabling researchers to evaluate genetic parts and cellular functions before developing a final application. It typically follows a design-build-test-learn cycle in which DNA sequences, regulatory elements, or genetic circuits are assembled, introduced into host cells, and assessed through measurable outputs such as protein production or changes in cell behavior. In biology, this approach helps reveal how biological components function together and supports the development of biosensors, engineered microbes, therapeutic systems, and sustainable biomanufacturing processes. Rapid prototyping can reduce development time while improving the reliability and predictability of biological designs.

This video presents synthetic biology and its role in bioengineering. Synthetic biology refers to the methods used to genetically modify organisms in order to make them capable of producing large quantities of a product. This product could be a protein that the cell already makes or a new protein that has been encoded in a newly-inserted DNA sequence. Here, we discuss how an organism's genetic material is modified using transformation or transfection. Then, the process is shown in the...
