Tissue Structure

Tissue structure is the organized arrangement of cells and extracellular materials that enables groups of cells to perform coordinated biological functions. Cells with specialized shapes and roles connect through junctions, interact with the extracellular matrix, and establish spatial patterns such as layers, networks, or compartments; these features determine how tissues receive signals, exchange materials, withstand forces, and repair damage. In biology, analyzing tissue structure through microscopy, histology, and imaging helps link cellular organization to organ function and disease. This knowledge supports research in development, pathology, regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering, where maintaining appropriate architecture is essential for restoring or modeling biological function.
