Vacuum Manifold Elution

Vacuum manifold elution is a sample-preparation technique that uses reduced pressure to pull liquid through multiple solid-phase extraction cartridges or wells, enabling the selective isolation and cleanup of biological molecules. During processing, a vacuum draws the sample and wash solutions through a sorbent, while target compounds bind to the material and contaminants are removed; a suitable elution solvent then disrupts these interactions and releases the purified analyte. This parallel format improves workflow efficiency and supports consistent processing of nucleic acids, proteins, metabolites, and other biomolecules. Vacuum manifold elution is widely used before chromatography, mass spectrometry, and molecular biology assays.

High-Performance Liquid Chromatography: Elution Process

2024

In High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), the elution process is critical to the separation of analytes and the quality of chromatographic results. Elution describes how compounds move through the column and separate based on their interactions with the mobile and stationary phases. This process determines the resolution, peak shape, and retention times in the chromatogram, which are essential for identifying and quantifying components in complex mixtures. Understanding the elution...

Proper Operation of Vacuum Based Equipment

Source: Robert M. Rioux, Ajay Sathe & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Vacuum is required for a number of laboratory procedures. This is most routinely achieved in the laboratory by the use of vacuum pumps. In addition to working at low pressures, vacuum pumps can also be used to enable rapid changing of the atmospheres in a reactor or flask by evacuation and backfilling.

The coefficient of restitution is a parameter that describes the loss of kinetic energy during collision. Here, a free-fall setup under vacuum conditions is developed to be able to determine the coefficient of restitution parameter for particles in micrometer range with high impact velocities.
