Variable Volume Fed-batch

Variable volume fed-batch is a bioprocessing strategy in which cells or microorganisms grow in a bioreactor while nutrient-rich feed is added without maintaining a constant culture volume. As the feed accumulates, the working volume increases, and the addition rate is adjusted to control substrate availability, prevent inhibitory byproduct formation, and support oxygen transfer and cell growth. This approach can extend productive culture time and improve biomass or recombinant protein yields compared with batch culture. In biology, variable volume fed-batch processes are used for microbial fermentation, mammalian cell culture, and production of biopharmaceuticals, enzymes, vaccines, and other biologically derived products.

Fed-Batch Culture

Fed-batch culture is a widely used bioprocessing strategy combining aspects of batch culture with controlled substrate feeding to optimize cell growth and product formation. In this semi-closed system, nutrients are strategically added during fermentation, while the accumulated products and biomass remain within the bioreactor until the end of the operation. This controlled addition of substrates allows for better management of growth kinetics, nutrient limitation, and metabolite...

Batch and Continuous Bioreactors

2023

Bioreactors are used to grow organisms in large volumes, thereby enabling the production of mass quantities of the target product. These reactors can be batch reactors, which contain all of the components needed for cell growth, or continuous reactors, which have inlet and outlet ports allowing for the addition of fresh growth media and the removal of cell waste. This video presents batch and continuous reactors and demonstrates the use of bioreactors to grow bacteria in the laboratory.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Variable frequency drives (VFDs) are a type of adjustable speed drive, which are becoming standard equipment to power most AC induction motors. VFDs are common in industrial and automation applications and typically provide robust control of the motor in speed, torque, or position modes. The VFDs tested and simulated in this experiment focus on speed and open-loop control with constant voltage to...

Large-scale immunodetection of target proteins across the entire primate brain is possible by employing novel tissue embedding and sectioning methods combined with the use of creative apparatus for batch staining of multiple free-floating sections at a given time.

Batch vs Continuous Culture

Fermentation is a foundational biotechnological process used to produce pharmaceuticals, biofuels, enzymes, and food additives. Among industrial strategies, batch and continuous fermentation are the two most widely applied. Although both rely on microbial conversion of substrates into desired products, they differ markedly in operation, productivity, and suitability for specific applications.Batch fermentation occurs in a closed system in which nutrient media and inoculum are added at the...
