Villus Height Measurement

Villus height measurement is a histological method for quantifying the length of finger-like projections lining the small intestine, an important indicator of intestinal structure and absorptive capacity. Researchers examine stained tissue sections under a microscope and measure each villus from its base at the crypt-villus junction to its tip, often using calibrated imaging software across representative fields. The resulting measurements support comparisons of mucosal development, epithelial integrity, nutrient absorption, and intestinal injury between experimental groups. In biology and biomedical research, villus height helps evaluate effects of diet, infection, inflammation, toxic exposure, and treatments on gastrointestinal health.

Multilayer microfluidic devices often involve the fabrication of master molds with complex geometries for functionality. This article presents a complete protocol for multi-step photolithography with valves and variable height features tunable to any application. As a demonstration, we fabricate a microfluidic droplet generator capable of producing hydrogel beads.

Here, we present a novel protocol to measure positional stability at key events during the sit-to-stand-to-walk using the center-of-pressure to the whole-body-center-of-mass distance. This was derived from the force platform and three-dimensional motion-capture technology. The paradigm is reliable and can be utilized for the assessment of neurologically compromised individuals.

Measurement: Standard Units

2020

Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results. The number in the measurement can be represented in different ways, including decimal form and scientific notation, which is...
