Waring Blender

A Waring blender is a high-speed laboratory homogenizer that mechanically disrupts biological materials, producing a more uniform suspension for analysis. Its motor-driven blades generate intense shear and turbulence, breaking tissues, cells, or other samples into smaller fragments when blended under controlled conditions; temperature and processing time can affect sample integrity. In biology, Waring blenders are used to prepare tissue homogenates, extract cellular components, and create suspensions for biochemical assays, microscopy, or downstream molecular analysis. The method is rapid and practical for processing larger sample volumes, although it may damage delicate structures and should be selected according to the experimental goal.

Combining Analysis of DNA in a Crude Virion Extraction with the Analysis of RNA from Infected Leaves to Discover New Virus Genomes

2018

Here we present a new approach to identify plant viruses with double-strand DNA genomes. We use standard methods to extract DNA and RNA from infected leaves and carry out next-generation sequencing. Bioinformatic tools assemble sequences into contigs, identify contigs representing virus genomes and assign genomes to taxonomic groups.

Typha latifolia, which primarily propagates asexually through rhizomes, poses collection challenges due to its extensive root system. This paper presents a method for growing T. latifolia from seed, facilitating easier lab cultivation and offering the potential for sterile plant growth and early microbial bioaugmentation.

Preparation of Fixed Drosophila Oocytes for Immunostaining: A High-Throughput Method to Fix and Remove the Outer Membrane

2023

Immunostaining of Drosophila late-stage oocytes can prove challenging due to the oocytes' surrounding membranes. This video describes a high-throughput method for obtaining oocytes, their fixation, and membranes' removal for immunostaining. The featured protocol demonstrates these techniques with late-stage oocytes used to visualize different stages of meiosis.
