Wasp Emergence

Wasp emergence is the biological process by which a developing wasp completes metamorphosis and exits its pupal case, host, or nest as an adult, marking a critical transition in its life cycle. During development, larval tissues reorganize into adult structures inside a protected enclosure; hormonal changes coordinate pupal maturation, cuticle formation, and eclosion, after which the adult breaks free. Studying wasp emergence helps researchers determine developmental timing, sex ratios, survival, and host interactions, while emergence patterns inform ecological studies and the use of parasitoid wasps in biological control. Environmental conditions such as temperature can strongly influence when adults appear.

Parasitoid (parasitic) wasps constitute a major class of natural enemies of many insects including Drosophila melanogaster. We will introduce the techniques to propagate these parasites in Drosophila spp. and demonstrate how to analyze their effects on immune tissues of Drosophila larvae.

Guidelines in Case of a Laboratory Emergency

2023

Robert M. Rioux & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The most common laboratory emergencies include chemical spills, fire or explosion, electric shock, and personnel injuries. Most laboratory accidents occur due to poor planning or lack of attention. Therefore, it's always better to prevent accidents (being proactive) than having to take any actions during an emergency (being reactive). For example, always wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) in the...

Emerging Adulthood

Jeffrey Arnett's concept of emerging adulthood offers a framework to understand the unique developmental stage between adolescence and full-fledged adulthood, generally from ages 18 to 25. This period is marked by extensive exploration and shifts in identity, relationships, and career choices, a process known in psychology as role experimentation. Emerging adulthood reflects the evolving cultural expectations surrounding adulthood and the dynamic process of personal transformation during this...

Emergency Eyewash and Shower Stations

Robert M. Rioux, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates that an emergency eyewash and shower station be easily accessible in all workplaces in which a person could be exposed to injurious and/or corrosive substances. Emergency eyewash and shower stations should be used in the case of a laboratory or workplace accident that involves the spilling of a harmful, possibly corrosive chemical onto the body or the splashing...

The Emergence of the Phillips Curve

Economists have long explored how unemployment and inflation are related. In the 1950s, the economist A. W. Phillips analyzed almost a century of data from the United Kingdom to study this connection. His research examined the relationship between unemployment and changes in nominal wages. Phillips discovered that unemployment was usually low when nominal wages increased rapidly and high when nominal wages rose slowly. When employment opportunities are abundant and workers are few, firms compete...
