Water Properties

Water properties are the physical and chemical characteristics that make water essential for life, including its polarity, hydrogen bonding, solvent capacity, cohesion, and thermal stability. Polar water molecules form hydrogen bonds with one another and with other charged or polar substances, producing surface tension, adhesion, and a high specific heat capacity while enabling many biological compounds to dissolve. These properties support cellular reactions, regulate organismal and environmental temperature, drive movement through plants, and shape habitats and ecosystems. Understanding water properties helps explain processes such as nutrient transport, membrane organization, protein structure, and homeostasis across biological systems.

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.

Composition and Properties of Aquafaba: Water Recovered from Commercially Canned Chickpeas

Aquafaba is a viscous juice from canned chickpea that, when stirred vigorously, produces a relatively stable white froth or foam. The primary research goal is to identify the components of aquafaba that contribute viscosifying/thickening properties using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ultrafiltration, electrophoresis, and peptide mass fingerprinting.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter

2020

The characteristics that enable us to distinguish one substance from another are called properties. Physical Properties of Matter A physical property is a characteristic of matter that is not associated with a change in its chemical composition. Familiar examples of physical properties include density, color, hardness, melting and boiling points, and electrical conductivity. We can observe some physical properties, such as density and color, without changing the physical state of the matter...
