Zebrafish Life Stages

Zebrafish life stages describe the organism’s progression from fertilized egg through embryonic, larval, juvenile, and adult phases, providing a framework for studying vertebrate development. After fertilization, rapid cell division and organ formation produce a free-swimming embryo that hatches, begins feeding, and undergoes coordinated growth, tissue maturation, and sexual differentiation. Each stage has distinct anatomy, physiology, and environmental requirements, allowing researchers to examine processes such as regeneration, genetic regulation, behavior, and disease development. Because zebrafish develop externally and remain optically accessible during early growth, staged analysis supports applications in developmental biology, genetics, drug screening, and environmental toxicology.

Half-life of a Reaction

2020

The half-life of a reaction (t1/2) is the time required for one-half of a given amount of reactant to be consumed. In each succeeding half-life, half of the remaining concentration of the reactant is consumed. For example, during the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, during the first half-life (from 0.00 hours to 6.00 hours), the concentration of H2O2 decreases from 1.000 M to 0.500 M. During the second half-life (from 6.00 hours to 12.00 hours), the concentration decreases from 0.500 M to...

Zebrafish Reproduction and Development

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has become a popular model for studying genetics and developmental biology. The transparency of these animals at early developmental stages permits the direct visualization of tissue morphogenesis at the cellular level. Furthermore, zebrafish are amenable to genetic manipulation, allowing researchers to determine the effect of gene expression on the development of a vertebrate with a high degree of genetic similarity to humans. This video provides a brief overview of...

The Angiosperm Life Cycle

Plants have a life cycle split between two multicellular stages: a haploid stage—with cells containing one set of chromosomes—and a diploid stage—with cells containing two sets of chromosomes. The haploid stage is the gamete-producing gametophyte, and the diploid stage is the spore-producing sporophyte. Today, most plants grow from seeds and produce flowers and fruit; such plants are called angiosperms. Angiosperms begin as seeds—structures consisting of a protective seed coat, a nutrient...
