Acidity Basicity

Acidity and basicity are chemical properties that describe how substances donate or accept protons and how they influence the composition of a solution. In the Brønsted-Lowry framework, an acid transfers a proton to a base, while the resulting hydronium concentration determines pH; stronger acids or bases produce larger shifts in equilibrium, and conjugate acid-base pairs help explain these reactions. Measuring pH with indicators or electrodes, studying neutralization, and controlling buffer solutions allow chemists to analyze reactions, formulate products, and maintain conditions required for biological, environmental, and industrial processes.

Acidity and Basicity of Alcohols and Phenols

2025

Like water, alcohols are weak acids and bases. This is attributed to the polarization of the O–H bond making the hydrogen partially positive. Moreover, the electron pairs on the oxygen atom of alcohol make it both basic and nucleophilic. Protonation of an alcohol converts hydroxide, a poor leaving group, into water—a good one. The two acid–base equilibria corresponding to ethanol are depicted below. Figure 1. Loss of proton Figure 2. Gain of proton Methanol (pKa = 15.5) is the only alcohol...

Acidity and Basicity of Carboxylic Acid Derivatives

Carboxylic acids are the strongest among organic acids, as they readily lose the hydroxyl proton to form a resonance-stabilized carboxylate ion. In comparison, the acid derivatives lack acidic hydrogens directly attached to a functional group. In these compounds, the acidic nature arises from their ability to lose α hydrogens, making them weakly acidic. The relative acidic strength of the derivatives can be explained based on the extent of resonance stabilization of the conjugate base. The...

Chemical reactions, such as those that occur when you light a match, involve changes in energy as well as matter. Chemical changes and their accompanying changes in energy are important parts of everyday life. The macronutrients in food undergo metabolic reactions that provide the energy to keep bodies functioning. A variety of fuels (gasoline, natural gas, coal) is burned to produce energy for transportation, heating, and the generation of electricity. Industrial chemical reactions use...

Chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) are a valuable research tool, not only for studying important concepts in vertebrate development, neuroscience, and tumor biology, but also as an efficient system in which to propagate viruses. Although eggs can be purchased from external suppliers and working with chicks requires very little specialized equipment, an understanding of proper handling procedures is required for normal embryo development. This video will provide an overview of egg handling...
