Corannulene-based Lises

Corannulene-based ligands are molecular structures built around corannulene, a bowl-shaped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon whose curved π surface gives it distinctive electronic and recognition properties. Their behavior arises from the combination of a rigid, concave aromatic framework, bowl-to-bowl inversion, and interactions between substituents or donor atoms and other molecules, ions, or metal centers. In chemistry, these ligands support studies of coordination complexes, supramolecular recognition, host–guest binding, and curved-surface molecular design. Their tunable geometry and electronic structure also make them relevant to nanocarbon materials, molecular sensing, catalysis, and the development of functional architectures with controlled three-dimensional organization.

Base Excision Repair

2020

One of the common DNA damages is the chemical alteration of single bases by alkylation, oxidation, or deamination. The altered bases cause mispairing and strand breakage during replication. This type of damage causes minimal change to the DNA double helix structure and can be repaired by the base excision repair (BER) pathways. BER corrects damaged DNA sequences by removing the damaged base and restoring the original base sequence using the complementary strand as a template. The first step of...

Acids and Bases An Arrhenius acid produces hydrogen ions when it is dissolved in water: HA + H2O → H+(aq) + A-(aq) Here, HA is the non-dissociated acid, H+ is the hydrogen cation, and A- is the solvated anion — called the conjugate base. An Arrhenius base produces hydroxide ions when dissolved in water: BOH + H2O → B+(aq) + OH-(aq) Here, BOH is the non-dissociated base, OH- is the hydroxide ion, and B+ is the solvated cation — called the conjugate acid. A conjugate base is formed when an acid...

DNA Base Pairing

Erwin Chargaff’s rules on DNA equivalence paved the way for the discovery of base pairing in DNA. Chargaff’s rules state that in a double-stranded DNA molecule, the amount of adenine (A) is equal to the amount of thymine (T); the amount of guanine (G) is equal to the amount of cytosine (C); and the sum of purines, A and G, is equal to the sum of pyrimidines, C and T (i.e., A+G = C+T). Later work by Watson and Crick revealed that in double-stranded DNA, A always forms two hydrogen bonds...
