Electrochemical Gating

Electrochemical gating is a method for controlling the electrical or chemical behavior of a material by applying a voltage through an electrolyte-based interface. The applied potential drives ion movement or charge accumulation near the material, changing its carrier concentration, conductivity, redox state, or interfacial reactivity without necessarily altering its composition. In chemistry, this approach enables tunable control of molecular and materials properties, supporting electrochemical sensors, responsive interfaces, catalysis, and studies of charge-transfer processes. By linking electrical stimuli to chemical responses, electrochemical gating provides a useful framework for investigating and manipulating reactions at solid–liquid interfaces.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electrical resistance is the ability of an electrical circuit element to resist the flow of electricity. Resistance is defined by Ohm's Law: (Equation 1) Where is the voltage and is the current. Ohm's law is useful for determining the resistance of ideal resistors. However, many circuit elements are more complex and can't be described by...
