Energy Input

Energy input is the transfer of energy into a system, enabling physical changes, chemical reactions, or movement between energy states. In chemistry, supplied heat, light, electrical energy, or mechanical energy can overcome activation energy, break existing bonds, and promote the formation of new products; the amount required depends on the reaction pathway and conditions. Energy input is central to endothermic reactions, electrolysis, photochemical processes, and industrial synthesis, where it influences reaction rates, equilibrium, and efficiency. Understanding how energy enters and changes within a chemical system helps researchers design safer processes, interpret reaction behavior, and develop more sustainable methods for producing materials and fuels.

Free energy—abbreviated as G for the scientist Gibbs who discovered it—is a measurement of useful energy that can be extracted from a reaction to do work. It is the energy in a chemical reaction that is available after entropy is accounted for. Reactions that take in energy are considered endergonic and reactions that release energy are exergonic. Plants carry out endergonic reactions by taking in sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce glucose and oxygen. Animals, in turn, break down the...

In any production process, resources such as labor and capital must be allocated efficiently to maximize output. When multiple producers rely on the same fixed resources, the challenge is to distribute these inputs in a way that ensures no further improvements can be made without reducing another producer’s output.Efficiency in resource allocation is analyzed using isoquants, which represent different combinations of inputs that produce the same level of output. If an allocation allows at least...

Input Efficiency in Resource AllocationInput efficiency refers to the way productive resources like labor and capital are distributed across industries to maximize overall output. Unlike exchange efficiency, which deals with consumer goods allocation, input efficiency determines how resources are assigned to different production activities.Deciding How to Allocate ResourcesSince resources are limited, choices must be made about their use. Should engineers work in the automotive sector or the...

Caterpillar Energy Dynamics ExpandNOTE: In this lab you will grow caterpillars in conditions with and without food to examine the transfer of biomass in a typical trophic system. Weigh and record the wet mass of enough leaves of cabbage to line the bottom of a plastic tub. Then, collect two batches of five caterpillars from their cabbage habitat, and weigh and record the wet mass of each batch separately in individual weigh boats. Make sure to tare the balance before each measurement.

The universe is composed of matter in different forms, and all forms of matter contain energy. The different forms of energy on Earth originate from the Sun — the ultimate energy source. Plants capture light energy from the Sun, and, via the process of photosynthesis, convert it into chemical energy. This stored energy from plants can be harnessed in many ways. For example, eating plant products as food provides energy for our body to function, and burning wood or coal (fossilized plants)...
