Water Hardness Analysis

Water hardness analysis is the chemical determination of dissolved calcium and magnesium ions that cause water to form scale and react poorly with soap. In a common complexometric titration, a measured water sample is buffered to an alkaline pH and treated with EDTA, which binds the metal ions in stable 1:1 complexes; a metallochromic indicator signals the endpoint through a color change. Results are typically reported as calcium carbonate equivalents. This analysis helps assess drinking-water quality, diagnose scale formation, optimize industrial boilers and cooling systems, and evaluate water-treatment processes such as softening.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Hardness testing is one of the most universally valuable mechanical tests available to engineers, as it is both simple and relatively inexpensive for the wealth of information and data it produces. Hardness testing, generally in the form of a surface penetration test, is both quicker and less destructive than tensile testing. Hardness provides a linear relationship with tensile strength over a...

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.
