Goniometer

A goniometer is an instrument used to measure or set angles, making it valuable for characterizing geometric relationships in chemical and materials systems. Depending on its design, it determines an angle by rotating a calibrated arm, aligning optical components, or analyzing the profile of a liquid droplet resting on a surface. In chemistry, goniometers help measure interfacial angles between crystal faces for morphological and structural analysis, while contact-angle measurements reveal surface wettability, adhesion, and interactions between liquids and solids. These measurements support crystal characterization, surface treatment, formulation development, and the evaluation of materials used in catalysis and related technologies.

Diagnosis of Musculus Gastrocnemius Tightness - Key Factors for the Clinical Examination

2016

Isolated Musculus gastrocnemius tightness is a common cause for foot and ankle pathologies. Currently no standardized examination procedure exists. This manuscript demonstrates that 20 degree of knee flexion eliminates the restraining effect of the M. gastrocnemius on ankle dorsiflexion and presents a video description of a standardized examination protocol.

A Method to Manipulate Surface Tension of a Liquid Metal via Surface Oxidation and Reduction

We present a method to control the interfacial energy of a liquid metal in an electrolyte via electrochemical deposition (or removal) of a surface oxide layer. This simple method can control the capillary behavior of gallium-based liquid metals by tuning the interfacial energy rapidly, significantly, and reversibly using modest voltages.

Intracortical Inhibition Within the Primary Motor Cortex Can Be Modulated by Changing the Focus of Attention

Cryo Electron Microscopes, either Scanning (SEM) or Transmission (TEM), are widely used for characterization of biological samples or other materials with a high water content1. A SEM/Focused Ion Beam (FIB) is used to identify features of interest in samples and extract a thin, electron-transparent lamella for transfer to a cryo-TEM.

Physical Properties Of Minerals I: Crystals and Cleavage

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals comprise various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. Each of these properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This experiment examines two properties that stem primarily from symmetric repetition of...
