Graphite Oxide Powder

Graphite oxide powder is a layered carbon material produced by chemically oxidizing graphite, making it an important intermediate in nanomaterials chemistry. Oxidation introduces oxygen-containing functional groups between and across the graphite layers, expanding the interlayer spacing and increasing the material’s polarity, surface reactivity, and ability to disperse in water or other solvents. Researchers use graphite oxide to prepare graphene oxide through exfoliation and to develop polymer composites, coatings, membranes, adsorbents, and electrochemical materials. Its tunable chemistry also supports surface functionalization, enabling control over mechanical, electrical, and transport properties for applications in materials science and energy research.

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University X-ray crystallography is a technique that uses X-rays to study the structure of molecules. X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments are routinely carried out with either single-crystal or powdered samples. Single-crystal XRD: Single-crystal XRD allows for absolute structure determination. With single-crystal XRD data, the exact atomic positions can be observed, and thus bond lengths and angles can be determined. This...

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Surface area and pore size distribution are attributes used by adsorbent and catalyst manufacturers and users to ensure quality control and to determine when products are at the end of their useful lives. The surface area of a porous solid is directly related to its adsorption capacity or catalytic activity. The pore size distribution of an adsorbent or catalyst is...

Oxidation Numbers

2020

In redox reactions, the transfer of electrons occurs between reacting species. Electron transfer is described by a hypothetical number called the oxidation number (or oxidation state). It represents the effective charge of an atom or element, which is assigned using a set of rules. Oxidation Number (Oxidation State) In the case of an ionic compound, oxidation numbers are assigned based on the number of electrons transferred between reacting species. For example, in the formation of calcium...
