Non-uv Active Compounds

Non-UV-active compounds are chemical substances that absorb little or no ultraviolet radiation at practical analytical wavelengths, making them difficult to detect by conventional UV spectroscopy or HPLC-UV methods. Their limited response generally reflects the absence of chromophores that undergo suitable electronic transitions, so analysts may chemically derivatize the compound to introduce a UV-absorbing group or use detection based on refractive index, fluorescence, mass spectrometry, or electrochemical signals. Recognizing non-UV activity helps guide method selection, optimize separation and quantification, and prevent false conclusions caused by weak detector response. These considerations are important in pharmaceutical, environmental, biological, and synthetic chemistry analyses.

Absorbance When light interacts with a substance, a portion of the light is absorbed while the rest is either reflected or transmitted through it. Substances that we perceive as having a color reflect light in the visible range. The color of the substance that we are able to see depends on which wavelength of light is reflected. A substance that we perceive as blue reflects light in the blue range (430 – 480 nm) of the visible spectrum. According to the color wheel, the same substance absorbs...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy is one of the most popular analytical techniques because it is very versatile and able to detect nearly every molecule. With UV-Vis spectroscopy, the UV-Vis light is passed through a sample and the transmittance of light by a sample is measured. From the transmittance (T), the absorbance can be calculated as A=-log (T). An absorbance spectrum is obtained that shows the absorbance of a...

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Compound administration is often an integral component of an animal study. Many factors need to be evaluated to ensure that the compound is delivered correctly. The route of administration affects the mechanisms of absorption. The characteristics of the substance to be introduced (the pH, viscosity, and concentration) may dictate which route of administration is selected.
