Point Group

A point group is the complete set of symmetry operations that leave at least one point in a molecule or crystal unchanged, providing a framework for describing molecular symmetry. These operations include identity, proper rotation, reflection, inversion, and improper rotation; chemists identify the symmetry elements present and classify the structure according to the combinations they form. Point-group assignments help predict molecular properties and simplify chemical analysis by organizing molecular orbitals, bonding descriptions, and vibrational modes. In spectroscopy, group theory based on point-group symmetry indicates which transitions are allowed and helps interpret infrared and Raman spectra.

Synthesis of Masarimycin, a Small Molecule Inhibitor of Gram-Positive Bacterial Growth

2022

A detailed protocol is presented for preparing the bacteriostatic diamide masarimycin, a small molecule probe that inhibits the growth of Bacillus subtilis and Streptococcus pneumoniae by targeting cell wall degradation. Its application as a chemical probe is demonstrated in synergy/antagonism assays and morphological studies with B. subtilis and S. pneumoniae.

2019

Freshwater mussel conservation is dependent on monitoring reproductive patterns and processes of species. This study standardizes a non-lethal protocol for sampling gill contents, characterizing larval development, and providing a digital repository for data collected. This protocol-database package will be an important tool for mussel researchers in recovery of imperiled species.

Examining the Dynamics of Cellular Adhesion and Spreading of Epithelial Cells on Fibronectin During Oxidative Stress

This method is useful for quantifying the early dynamics of cellular adhesion and spreading of anchorage-dependent cells onto the fibronectin. Furthermore, this assay can be used to investigate the effects of altered redox homeostasis on cell spreading and/or cell adhesion-related intracellular signaling pathways.
