Polystyrene Sulfonic Acid

Polystyrene sulfonic acid is a functionalized polymer in which sulfonic acid groups are attached to a polystyrene backbone, combining synthetic polymer durability with strong acidity and ion-exchange behavior. Its pendant sulfonic acid groups can dissociate in water, releasing protons while negatively charged sulfonate sites retain counterions and interact with dissolved cations. In chemistry, this combination supports proton conduction, ion-exchange materials, acidic catalysis, and polymer electrolyte research, including blends used to modify electrical conductivity and solution processing.

Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution: Sulfonation of Benzene

2023

Sulfonation of benzene is a reaction wherein benzene is treated with fuming sulfuric acid at room temperature to produce benzenesulfonic acid. Fuming sulfuric acid is a mixture of sulfur trioxide and concentrated sulfuric acid. The active electrophile is either neutral sulfur trioxide or protonated sulfur trioxide ion, depending on the reaction conditions. One of the mechanisms involves neutral sulfur trioxide acting as an electrophile, which reacts with the π electron cloud of nucleophilic...
