Pressure Vessel Testing

Pressure vessel testing is the evaluation of enclosed containers designed to hold gases or liquids at pressures above or below ambient, confirming structural integrity and safe operation. Tests may apply hydrostatic pressure using an incompressible liquid or pneumatic pressure using a gas, while inspectors monitor for leaks, permanent deformation, and pressure loss under defined conditions. In chemistry, these evaluations support the safe use of reaction vessels, autoclaves, gas cylinders, and storage systems in laboratories and manufacturing facilities. Reliable testing helps prevent releases and equipment failure, protects personnel, and maintains controlled reaction conditions when pressure, temperature, and corrosive chemicals interact.

Operation of High-pressure Reactor Vessels

2023

Robert M Rioux, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The use of gases in a synthetic chemistry laboratory is essential for carrying out a variety of highly facile and atom economical transformations. Reactions such as hydrogenation, oxidation, and amination require the use of gases like hydrogen, oxygen, and ammonia. Due to the poor solubility of these gases in typical reactant solutions, high pressures are necessary to achieve a meaningful reaction rate. Not only are these gases...

We describe a "gold standard" for evaluating orthostatic tolerance (OT) using tilt testing with combined lower body negative pressure (LBNP). This can be combined with non-invasive evaluations of cardiovascular reflex control. Normal and abnormal responses are defined.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Stability of Floating Vessels

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Kevin Rao Li Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate the phenomenon of stability of floating vessels - the ability to self-right when rolled over to the side by some external force. Careful design of hull shapes and internal mass distribution enables seagoing vessels to be stable with low drafts (submerged depth of hull), improving vessel...

Here we present a protocol for performing reactions in simple reaction vessels under low-to-moderate pressures of CO2. The reactions can be performed in a variety of vessels simply by administering the carbon dioxide in the form of dry ice, without the need for costly or elaborate equipment or set-ups.
