Ring Closure Reaction

A ring closure reaction is a chemical transformation in which two reactive sites within the same molecule form a new bond, creating a cyclic structure. The process occurs through an intramolecular reaction, often involving nucleophilic attack, electrophilic activation, or radical coupling, and its efficiency depends on chain length, ring strain, concentration, solvent, and catalyst choice. Ring closure reactions are central to organic synthesis because they produce carbocycles, heterocycles, and macrocycles found in pharmaceuticals, natural products, polymers, and functional materials. Controlling regioselectivity and stereochemistry during cyclization enables researchers to construct complex molecular architectures efficiently and investigate new routes to biologically or technologically important compounds.

The accompanying video describes a procedure for percutaneous placement of the WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Device. The WATCHMAN is a nitinol device designed to be permanently implanted at, or slightly distal to, the opening of the left atrial appendage (LAA) to trap blood clots before they exit the LAA, preventing thromboembolic stroke.

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

2023

Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

Transthoracic (TTE) and transesophageal (TEE) echocardiography represent the basic imaging tools for interatrial septum examination. Three dimensional (3D) TEE provides incremental information in the assessment of the interatrial septum. Further advanced echocardiography techniques using speckle tracking echocardiography are applied for sensitive volumetric and functional assessment of the heart...
