Acute Care

Acute care is the short-term medical treatment of patients with sudden, severe, or rapidly worsening conditions that require prompt assessment and intervention. Clinicians prioritize airway, breathing, circulation, neurological status, and immediate threats through rapid examination, diagnostic testing, continuous monitoring, and time-sensitive treatment. Acute care encompasses emergency medicine, intensive care, trauma management, and hospital-based services for problems such as infection, injury, respiratory failure, and cardiac events. Its coordinated, multidisciplinary approach can stabilize patients, prevent deterioration, guide definitive treatment, and support safe transitions to longer-term care.

We describe a model of hydrochloric acid-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in piglets receiving sedation with halogenated agents, isoflurane and sevoflurane, through a device used for inhaled intensive care sedation. This model can be used to investigate the biological mechanisms of halogenated agents on lung injury and repair.
