C-glucuronides

C-glucuronides are glucuronic acid conjugates in which the sugar is linked to a drug or other molecule through a stable carbon–carbon bond, making them important metabolites in clinical pharmacology. They form when UDP-glucuronic acid donates glucuronic acid during enzyme-mediated glucuronidation, producing a C-linked structure rather than the more readily hydrolyzed oxygen-linked glucuronides. This chemical stability can influence metabolic clearance, pharmacokinetics, biological activity, and detection in clinical samples. Studying C-glucuronides helps researchers interpret drug metabolism, assess metabolite safety and efficacy, and develop reliable analytical methods for monitoring medicines and their biotransformation products.

Phase II Reactions: Glucuronidation

2025

Glucuronidation, a pivotal phase II biotransformation process, involves the coupling of glucuronic acid to a drug or xenobiotic. Given its widespread occurrence and critical role in drug metabolism, it's considered the most crucial phase II reaction. It enhances the water solubility of substances, aiding their expulsion from the body. The driving force behind these reactions is a group of enzymes known as UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs). UGTs facilitate the transfer of a glucuronic acid...

Here, we describe a growth condition to culture the small colony variant of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We also describe two separate methods for the detection and quantitation of the exopolysaccharide alginate produced by P. aeruginosa using a traditional uronic acid carbazole assay and an alginate-specific monoclonal antibody (mAb) based ELISA.
