Cardiac Chambers

Cardiac chambers are the four internal spaces of the heart that receive and pump blood, coordinating pulmonary and systemic circulation. The right atrium and ventricle move oxygen-poor blood to the lungs, while the left atrium and ventricle propel oxygen-rich blood through the body; valves open and close in response to pressure changes to maintain one-way flow. In clinical practice, assessing chamber size, wall thickness, contractility, and filling helps identify conditions such as heart failure, congenital defects, and cardiomyopathy. Echocardiography, cardiac MRI, and other imaging methods provide structural and functional measurements that guide diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring.

We present the protocols to examine mouse heart development using whole mount epifluorescent microscopy on mouse embryos dissected from ventricular specific MLC-2v-tdTomato reporter knock-in mice. This method allows us to directly visualize each stage of the ventricular formation during mouse heart development without labor-intensive histochemical methods.

Source: Frederick W. Damen and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana In this video, high field, small-bore magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with physiological monitoring is demonstrated to acquire gated cine loops of the murine cardiovascular system. This procedure provides a basis for assessing left-ventricular function, visualizing vascular networks, and quantifying motion of organs due to respiration. Comparable small animal...

Streptococcus pneumoniae forms discrete non-purulent microscopic lesions in the heart. Outlined is the protocol for a murine model of cardiac microlesion formation. Instruction is provided on microlesion visualization using microscopy, discrimination between early and late microlesions, and methods to detect cardiac remodeling in hearts of convalescent animals.
