Continuous Positive Airway Pressure

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a noninvasive respiratory support method that maintains a constant level of pressure in the airways to improve breathing and gas exchange. Delivered through a mask or nasal interface, CPAP uses pressurized air to splint open collapsible upper-airway structures, reduce airway obstruction, and support functional lung volume without providing mandatory breaths. Clinically, it is a first-line treatment for obstructive sleep apnea and can support patients with selected forms of respiratory distress, including neonatal conditions, when spontaneous breathing persists. Proper interface fitting, pressure selection, monitoring, and adherence are essential for effective treatment and minimizing discomfort or complications.

Basic Life Support Part II: Airway/Breathing and Continued Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation are the most important interventions for patients with cardiac arrest, and should be the first steps that rescuers perform. This is reflected in the American Heart Association's new "CAB" mnemonic. While rescuers were once taught the "ABCs" of cardiac arrest, they now learn "CAB" -...

COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak: Protecting The Airway - Endotracheal Intubation

2020

In pandemic times, medical staff is becoming a key resource in fighting the infection. To achieve the best medical care, relevant techniques and procedures have to be taught to medical staff to reduce the risk of infection. COVID patients often need mechanical ventilation due to progredient respiratory insufficiency, so an endotracheal intubation becomes a critical procedure in managing these patients. This procedure has an increased risk of infection due to aerosol formation and working with...

Here, based on a clinician’s point-of-view, we propose a two-model lower body positive pressure (LBPP) protocol (walking and squatting models) in addition to a clinical, functional assessment methodology, including details for further encouragement of the development of non-drug surgical intervention strategies in knee osteoarthritis patients. However, we only present the effect of LBPP training in improvement of pain and knee function in one patient through three-dimensional gait analysis. The...

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Continuous Telemetric In Utero Tracheal Pressure Measurements in Fetal Lambs

Optimization of occlusion pressure and duration required to improve lung hypoplasia with tracheal occlusion is essential to improve in utero corrective treatments for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). This study reports a new method for continuous measurement of the tracheal pressure in an occluded and unoccluded fetal lamb surgical model of CDH.
