Fluid Volume Status

Fluid volume status describes the amount and distribution of water in the body, particularly within the intravascular and extracellular compartments, and is essential for maintaining tissue perfusion and organ function. The kidneys and hormonal systems regulate sodium and water balance, while clinicians assess volume through symptoms, physical findings, vital signs, urine output, and laboratory measurements. Identifying hypovolemia, euvolemia, or hypervolemia helps explain conditions such as dehydration, edema, and circulatory instability. In clinical practice, evaluating fluid volume status supports decisions about intravenous fluids, diuretics, and treatment of underlying disease, while repeated assessment helps reduce complications from inadequate or excessive fluid therapy.

Source: Madeline Lassche, MSNEd, RN and Katie Baraki, MSN, RN, College of Nursing, University of Utah, UT Intravenous (IV) fluid administration and peripheral IV catheters (PIVs) may be discontinued for a number of reasons. The most common reason for discontinuing IV fluids is that the patient has returned to normal body fluid volume (euvolemia) and is able to maintain adequate oral fluid intake or is being discharged from the hospital. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control Guidelines...

Marcia's Theory of Identity Status

2025

James Marcia's identity status model provides a framework for understanding how adolescents navigate identity formation through varying degrees of exploration and commitment. Marcia's model builds on Erik Erikson's theories of psychosocial development, focusing specifically on how adolescents reconcile individual aspirations with societal expectations. His model describes identity formation as a dynamic process where adolescents move between different states depending on their level of...
