Iv Insertion Technique

IV insertion technique is a clinical procedure used to establish access to a vein so healthcare professionals can deliver fluids, medications, blood products, or obtain blood samples. Using aseptic preparation, a needle guides a flexible catheter through the skin and into a peripheral vein; blood return helps confirm vessel entry before the catheter advances, the needle is removed, and the device is secured. Accurate insertion depends on selecting an appropriate vein, maintaining sterility, and recognizing complications such as infiltration, phlebitis, or infection. Competence in this technique supports timely treatment, reliable vascular access, and safer patient care across clinical settings.

2023

Source: Madeline Lassche, MSNEd, RN and Katie Baraki, MSN, RN, College of Nursing, University of Utah, UT The purpose of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV) insertion is to infuse medications, perform intravenous (IV) fluid therapy, or inject radioactive tracers for special examination procedures. Placing a PIV is an invasive procedure and requires the use of an aseptic, no-touch technique. Common IV venipuncture sites are the arms and hands in adults and the feet in children. According to...

Impression Management Techniques IV: Altercasting

2025

Altercasting is a strategic communication technique in which an individual imposes a specific identity or social role onto another person to influence their behavior and shape the interaction. By presuming a role—such as “responsible leader” or “patient person”—altercasting encourages the target to conform to that identity, often aligning their behavior with the expectations associated with the role. The power of this tactic lies in its subtlety; once a role is assigned, it becomes socially...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

2025

Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Cited by 1 •

2011

There are technical obstacles to measuring current flux through multiple ion channels simultaneously, and later discerning what portion of the transmembrane current is due to each channel type. To address this need, this method presents a way to generate the IV curve of individual channel types using specific frequency components.
