Nail Hygiene

Nail hygiene is the routine care and cleaning of fingernails and toenails to maintain healthy nail tissue and reduce the buildup or spread of microorganisms. It involves washing hands and feet, trimming nails regularly with clean tools, keeping the nail folds dry, and avoiding practices that damage the cuticle or surrounding skin. In clinical settings, careful nail hygiene supports infection prevention by limiting dirt and microbial contamination, while nail inspection can reveal discoloration, swelling, tenderness, or changes associated with underlying conditions. Consistent technique also protects patients and healthcare workers during examination, treatment, and daily care.
