Preterm Newborns

Preterm newborns are infants born before 37 completed weeks of gestation, making them an important focus of clinical care because immature organs can increase vulnerability after birth. Their limited development of the lungs, brain, immune system, and ability to regulate temperature and feeding may require specialized monitoring and supportive interventions, including respiratory assistance, thermal control, nutritional support, and infection prevention. Clinical management aims to stabilize vital functions, promote growth, and reduce complications associated with prematurity. Studying preterm newborns also informs neonatal medicine, developmental follow-up, and strategies that improve survival and long-term health outcomes.

Development of a Neonatal Piglet Acute Lung Injury Model Recreating the Early Environment of Preterm Infant Lungs

2025

This protocol describes the development of a neonatal piglet model of acute lung injury that models early pathogenic events occurring in the preterm lung, including sub-adequate surfactant quantity, hyperoxia, high-pressure ventilation, and inflammation, to facilitate understanding of molecular triggers of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and enhance therapeutic translation.
